Some satire and some statements illuminating the hypocrisy and malevolence of Republican politicians and their network, Fox News.
Thinking out loud about the impact of climate change makes you a fascist.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) had the audacity to take to the Internet for some frank discussion on how the world is getting fucked, and that in the light of climate change and other upcoming catastrophes, some young people think about the ethics of having children.
View her speaking, in her own words. You don't have to agree with her statement, (I do), but take the time from 4:40 to 5:25 to hear her argument.
Her premises: The world is about to go through some shit; Parents want the best for their children. Therefore, is it moral to bring kids into a world that we know is going to shit? It isn't as if everyone is going to stop - she isn't advocating the end of humanity. Also note the lack of words like "regulation" or "government" or "ban".
Now, let's get some insight from Fox News - (0:20 to 1:09)
These people imply that AOC literally wants to ban children like a Chinese policy, and that she is on a path to "banning" children, airplanes and cows.
Do you think it is a bad idea for humanity to consume less meat? Do you think it is a bad idea for humanity to consume fewer plastics and fossil fuels? Do you think it is somehow inherently wrong to ask moral questions about the future of the nation?
This reminds me of a quote from Aaron Burr in "Hamilton", giving advice to the title character.
Why do you always say what you believe?
Every proclamation guarantees
Free ammunition for your enemies.
Having frank, honest philosophical discussion about climate was spun by her enemies into outright lies. That's the reward for engaging with the public.
Next time someone says "Why don't politicians just talk to people?" - think of this.
What if Fox covered Trump the way they covered Obama?
Mitch McConnell Doesn't Have Principles, Example #724
Covered in a previous post, we know that Mitch is one of the most damaging political actors of our time. It is once again proven - through his statement and shit-eating smirk in this video - that his unilateral blocking of Merrick Garland's consideration to the Supreme Court was nothing but political. If this seems normal to someone, I question their understanding of the patriotic function of government. There must be some kind of rock bottom to hit in the realpolitik actions of a Senator, and Mitch sure keeps pushing it down.
General Thoughts on Trump's anti-American behavior
When you think about this behavior, do you think about the Founding Fathers? When you think of Donald Trump, are you reminded of the unifying grace and devotion to public service exhibited by our first president?
When you read the writings and speeches of Robert or John Kennedy, or the farewell addresses of Jefferson and Washington; when you see the primacy of public service to private gain and the humility of their character; their respect for highest office and the importance of good government... Do you think of Donald Trump?
